OUR PHILOSOPHY
We are a Christ-centered ministry of worship, fellowship, education, and evangelistic outreach. Our mission is to serve Jesus Christ, working together to meet needs within our congregation, community and our world.
What to Expect
All are welcome at Stockton Presbyterian Church! We're always glad to welcome new visitors, and we hope you'll join us in worship. We want to make your visit as comfortable as possible, so here's what you can expect on a typical Sunday morning: We have no dress code. Wear what’s comfortable for you. Sunday worship is led by our pastor and a weekly volunteer liturgist who opens the service with announcements and “Greet Your Neighbor” (feel free to remain seated if you choose). Ours is a traditional hour-long service that includes a sermon, Scripture readings, and congregational interactive portions such as hymns, call to worship, prayer of confession, creeds and choruses. Words and hymn numbers are printed in the weekly bulletin which is handed out at the front door. Holy Communion is served the first Sunday of each month. Everyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is welcome to participate. You are also free to decline. Usually, people are served in the pew where they sit: first a bite-sized portion of bread, then a thumb-sized plastic cup of grape juice. The bread and cup remind us of the body and blood of Christ shed for us as remittance for our sins. We sing traditional songs from hymnals placed in the pew racks. We have occasional special music (duet or trio). Hymn accompaniments—orchestral and organ arrangements—are provided by our sound board technician. We welcome your talent! Let us know if you sing or play an instrument and would like to join our worship team.
A Brief History
As early as 1860 a group of Old School Presbyterians met at various homes in and around Cedar County. An effort was made to organize a church in the 1880s and early 1890s but was not successful until the early 1900s. Our congregation has been a part of the Stockton community since 1901, first in the historic downtown and—after the 2003 Stockton tornado—at our current location west of Stockton town square. In our new sanctuary you will see stained glass windows recovered from the downtown church after the tornado. We are also part of a greater body: the historic Presbyterian Church USA. “Presbyterians were among the earliest Reformed immigrants to America. They settled up and down the East Coast, and began to push westward into the American wilderness, founding congregations as early as the 1630s. In 1706, seven Presbyterian ministers formed the first Presbyterian presbytery in the New World. In 1788, the synod met in Philadelphia to form the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.”
